Community: Northumberland County | Years of Service: Three years

As part of our new Trustee Spotlight series, we are introducing you to the dedicated leaders who serve on the PVNC Catholic Board of Trustees. Trustees play a vital role in guiding Catholic education, advocating for students and families, and strengthening connections with our school communities. Each month, we’ll feature one trustee to share their story, experiences, and what inspires them in this important work.

Why did you choose to become a trustee?
I spent over 30 years as an elementary teacher with PVNC Catholic. I wanted a way to continue to advocate for the needs of our students and our Catholic school communities after I retired. I believed that my experience in schools could bring a valuable perspective to the Board table.

What have you found most rewarding about serving your school communities?
I find it rewarding when I am able to work with senior administration to make tweaks to our policy in order to best serve the needs of our students, their families and our staff.

What has been a memorable or proud moment during your time as a PVNC Catholic trustee?
I am a part of the Special Education Advisory Committee. In this capacity, I have been able to help form resolutions and other communications to bring to a provincial level, advocating for changes to the special education model and funding that would better help our students with special needs and their families.

What do you love most about the specific community you serve?
I taught in this community for the majority of my career. My children attended school in Port Hope. Some of my grandchildren are now students with PVNC Catholic. I have lived in the same home in Port Hope for over thirty years. I feel a sense of investment and pride in the dedicated and supportive community we offer our families.

Tell us one fun or surprising fact about yourself.
I knit just about every day. It is meditative and helps keep me focused when I am in situations where I must listen for long periods of time. I know that it is similar to our students who have trouble ‘sitting still’ and benefit from having fidget toys while listening or standing up while working. It’s a way to channel energy positively.
