Our Commitment to Responsible AI Use
At the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington (PVNC) Catholic District School Board, we recognize the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in both education and administration. Used thoughtfully, AI can enhance student learning, support staff efficiency, and streamline operations.
At the same time, we are committed to using AI responsibly—balancing innovation with ethical considerations, privacy protections, and human oversight.
Our Guiding Principles
These five principles shape our approach to AI use across PVNC Catholic schools and offices, rooted in our mission to serve students and staff with care, integrity, and innovation.
Our Approach
PVNC Catholic is in the early stages of integrating AI into teaching, learning, and administration. We are guided by current best practices from educational institutions, provincial policies, and our own Catholic values.
We will continue to monitor developments in AI technology and update our practices and guidelines to ensure safe, ethical, and meaningful integration across our system.
How We Use AI at PVNC Catholic
We use approved AI tools to support—not replace—human expertise in the following areas:
- Enhancing Learning: AI can support personalized instruction, accessibility, and student engagement through classroom tools and applications.
- Supporting Educators: Teachers may use AI to help with lesson planning, assessment strategies, or reducing administrative load.
- Improving Administration: Non-teaching staff may use AI to assist with tasks such as drafting communications, analyzing data, or generating summaries—always with final human review.
Our Safeguards
We take a cautious and values-driven approach to AI at PVNC Catholic:
- AI will never replace human decision-making in teaching, assessment, or staffing decisions.
- We do not allow AI to process or store personal, confidential, or sensitive information.
- All AI use must include human oversight to ensure fairness, accuracy, and appropriateness.
- We actively promote digital literacy, privacy awareness, and ethical use among both students and staff.
