On Sunday, March 1 in Port Hope and Sunday, March 8 in Bowmanville, families across the school community laced up their skates for two Catholic Parent Engagement Committee (CPEC) public skate events.

Approximately 400 participants attended these events, bringing together students, parents, teachers, administrators, support staff, and Trustees for an afternoon of connection, laughter, and community spirit.

The rinks were filled with energy and enthusiasm, shared conversations, and strengthened relationships that extend beyond the classroom.

These events provided a welcoming space for members of the community to spend time together in a relaxed setting while celebrating the importance of family engagement in education.

Kevin MacKenzie, Board Chairperson, spoke about the value of the gatherings. “These public skate events are an outstanding opportunity to connect with families in a fun and meaningful way. When we come together like this, we strengthen the relationships that support student success and help build a strong sense of belonging in our school communities.”

Rachel Logan, Chair of CPEC, highlighted the role parents play in school engagement. “It was really meaningful to see so many families come out and spend time together. Parent engagement isn’t only about meetings and committees — it’s also about creating opportunities for families to connect, play, and feel part of the life of our schools and communities. Seeing parents, grandparents, students, and staff all sharing the ice together reminded me how important those moments are. When families feel connected and engaged, it strengthens the whole school community.”

Director of Education Stephen O’Sullivan expressed gratitude to everyone who attended. “Thank you to the students, parents, Trustees, teachers, administrators, and support staff who joined us. Your presence makes a real difference. When our communities come together, it creates a positive and supportive environment that benefits our students and strengthens the connections that make our schools special.”
