St. Paul CES students spread kindness through Valentine’s Day Bingo for a good cause

The Grade 5/6 class at St. Paul Catholic Elementary School in Peterborough recently embarked on a Deep Learning Project centred around kindness and the spirit of Valentine’s Day. Their project culminated in organizing and hosting a school-wide Bingo game, all while raising awareness about childhood hunger in Ontario.
“We are so proud of the hard work and enthusiasm that our students displayed for this project,” said Christine Brodie, Principal. “We know the importance of a good breakfast and proper nutrition for learning and our students researched and chose this organization as it served children in our community. What a fun way to help our Community Partners! This is social justice in action.”
Through their research, the students discovered a troubling statistic: 29% of food bank visitors in Ontario are children, despite making up only 19% of the population. This insight sparked their desire to make a difference. The students learned that access to nutritious food is crucial for children’s academic success, allowing them to concentrate better in class, miss fewer school days, and achieve higher grades.
Motivated by this new understanding, the class decided to support Kids Against Hunger which is dedicated to addressing childhood hunger. With this goal in mind, the students organized a Bingo event, held on February 14, 2025. The whole school joined in, with Bingo cards and markers ready as the Grade 5/6 students called out the numbers.
All proceeds from the game were donated to Kids Against Hunger, making the event a meaningful way to give back to the community.
