Renewing the Promise: PVNC Schools Celebrate – Catholic Education Week (May 6 to May 11)

notice of catholic education week

During the week of May 6 to May 11, 2018, the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board will celebrate the significant contribution that Catholic education has made to the community, the province and to Canada.

Our Catholic Graduate Expectations challenge students to articulate in society those fundamental values that underpin Catholic education. And to help raise awareness about the Ontario Catholic Graduate Expectations, the Grade 8 class of Monsignor O’Donoghue Catholic Elementary School in Peterborough has created a special awareness video called: Keep an Eye on Your Actions.

The theme for this year’s Catholic Education Week is Catholic Education: Renewing the Promise(L’éducation catholique: Renouveler la promesse). The theme draws upon previous documents on Ontario Catholic education such as “This Moment of Promise” (1989) and “Fulfilling the Promise” (1993) and the release this week of the Assembly of Catholic Bishops of Ontario’s Pastoral Letter Renewing the Promise” (2018). These documents all speak of the unique mission of Ontario Catholic education, the importance of its shared responsibility by all those involved in Catholic education and the critical role of Catholic education in contemporary society.

In his CEW 2018 video message to our Catholic school communities, Peterborough Bishop Daniel Miehm credits his Catholic education at St. Leo Catholic School in Kitchener, Ont. for influencing his faith and vocation.

“I am grateful for the good education that I received. There I saw the good example of Catholic teachers who saw their role as a true mission. There I was nourished by prayer and sacraments and worship. And

it was there that I learned something about need in the world and how the love of God compels us to help love our neighbour as Jesus taught us,” Bishop Miehm said.

Catholic Education Week 2018 combines the themes of reconciliation, solidarity, love, justice and ecology. There are five sub-themes, one for each day of Catholic Education Week and they are aimed at helping staff and students to reflect more fully on what Renewing the Promise means to them.

The five sub-themes are:

Day 1: Remembering the Promise/Faire mémoire de la promesse

Day 2: The Promise is Within You/La promesse est en toi

Day 3: Praying the Promise/Prier la promesse

Day 4: Living the Promise/Vivre la promesse

Day 5: Proclaiming the Promise/Annoncer la promesse

Catholic Education Week is marked by special activities at all grade levels, including prayer celebrations and service activities. PVNC will host its annual Catholic Student Leadership Awards night at Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School in Peterborough on Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at 7 p.m.
