Everyday Heroes: Kara Lanigan, Keri Burnett, and Carmelina Dervent
March 12, 2026
We are honoured to present this week’s Everyday Heroes for the 2025-2026 school year.
Our everyday heroes are the epitome of compassion, devotion and care, transforming everyday tasks into extraordinary impacts.
Their subtle yet powerful actions not only elevate the experiences of colleagues but also enrich the lives of the students we proudly serve. They are more than just supportive adults or empathetic peers; they are the vibrant pulse of our educational community, profoundly touching the lives of all they encounter.
Our everyday heroes come in all forms, quietly making a difference in our schools and board offices, yet very often they overlook or downplay their own actions.
This week we are celebrating Kara Lanigan, Keri Burnett, and Carmelina Dervent
Kara Lanigan

Kara is an Educational Assistant (EA) at St. Martin CES in Ennismore
Kara was nominated by a colleague, who said:
“Kara is an exceptional member of the St. Martin team whose kindness, care, and genuinely loving presence make a lasting impact on everyone around her.
As an Education Assistant, she consistently goes above and beyond to support students academically, socially, and emotionally, meeting each child exactly where they are with patience and compassion. Kara has a remarkable ability to create a safe, inclusive, and encouraging environment where students feel seen, valued, and confident to grow. She works collaboratively with teachers and staff, always anticipating needs and offering support with quiet dedication and professionalism.
Kara’s warmth, empathy, and unwavering commitment to student success make her not only an incredible Education Assistant, but also a truly invaluable part of the St. Martin community.” |
Keri Burnett

Keri is a Secretary at the Catholic Education Centre (Board Office) in Peterborough.
Keri was nominated by a colleague, who said:
“Keri is an everyday hero whose kindness and calm make a difference in ways big and small.
As the first friendly face at the CEC board office, she greets each person—whether a nervous interview candidate or a longtime colleague—with genuine warmth and care. Helping to solve problems, directing calls, and keeping the day running smoothly whether organizing PD lunch orders, sending memos, or juggling the many unseen details that help keep the board office moving, Keri handles it all with grace, ease, and a ready smile. Beyond the CEC. Keri gives of herself to her community, always finding ways to nurture life—be it through caring for others, or with her green thumb.
Keri reminds us that everyday heroes don’t seek recognition—they simply make the world better, one thoughtful act at a time.” |
Carmelina Dervent
 |
Carmelina is the Chaplain at St. Stephen CSS in Bowmanville.
Carmelina was nominated by a colleague, who said:
“It is my pleasure to nominate Chaplain Carm (Carmelina Dervent) of St. Stephen Catholic Secondary School, our Catholic faith leader whose impact on our school community has been profound in her very first year of ministry. With joyful conviction and unwavering compassion, she has strengthened the spiritual life of our school by organizing daily prayer, coordinating all school Masses, and creating meaningful opportunities for reconciliation and reflection.
Carm’s leadership reaches far beyond liturgical planning. She builds authentic relationships—leading Tuesday youth groups, visiting classrooms to connect with students, organizing a Faith Meets Pedagogy trip to Toronto, supporting Diversity and Equity initiatives and Black History Month, and creating welcoming spaces through the Lunch/Brunch Club and food drives. Whether assisting with Ski Club or Junior and Senior Basketball, she shows up wholeheartedly for our students in every aspect of school life.
What stands out most to me is the way she shows up for both staff and students. She listens deeply and takes the time to truly understand and care, especially during the many challenges that come with school life. Her empathy, openness, and constant willingness to include others make a real difference. Her door is always open, and she greets everyone with warmth and a genuine smile. She leads with humility and radiates hope, fostering a sense of belonging that uplifts our entire community. Chaplain Carm truly lives out the Gospel each day and is more than deserving of recognition as an Everyday Hero.” |
We would like to thank Kara, Keri, and Carmelina for their commitment to creating a culture of faith, hope and love to ensure equity and well-being at our board.
