Two dedicated volunteers from St. Mary Catholic Elementary School in Grafton have been recognized with Ontario Volunteer Service Awards for their outstanding contributions through Rebound Youth Services.

Diana Storen and Gayle Carver were honoured at a special ceremony on Friday, Sept. 5, 2025, for their ongoing commitment to supporting early literacy at the school.

Storen, who began volunteering with Rebound in 2004, and Carver, who joined in 2007, visit the school twice a week to read with students in Senior Kindergarten and Grades 1 and 2.

On average, each volunteer supports approximately 10 students during their over two-hour sessions.

Beyond her literacy support, Storen also plays a key role in accompanying the school choir during Mass and special events, further enriching the school community.

St. Mary CES Principal Nancy Jones and School Secretary Tracy Gifford, who submitted the nominations, attended the ceremony in support of the honourees.

“We are incredibly grateful for the time, care, and commitment that Diana and Gayle bring to our students,” Jones said. “Their presence makes a lasting impact on the children they work with, and we’re thrilled to see them receive the recognition they deserve.”

At the ceremony, Northumberland-Peterborough South MPP and Minister of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development David Piccini presented Storen with a certificate and 20-year service pin, while Carver received a 15-year certificate and pin in recognition of their years of impactful involvement.
