PVNC Catholic mourns passing of former trustee Helen McCarthy

The flags were flying at half mast at all Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board facilities on Monday, Jan. 8, 2024 as the school board community mourned the passing of former trustee and educator Helen McCarthy.

McCarthy, who served as City of Peterborough trustee for eight years beginning in 2014, and who was a retired teacher with the Board, passed away on Dec. 30, 2023.

A multi-denominational service was held in Peterborough on Jan. 4 followed by interment in Highland Park Cemetery.

“Helen was a passionate advocate on behalf of students and staff and served her role as a trustee with passion, always speaking up for the marginalized and ensuring that our Catholic schools were welcoming, inclusive places for all,” Director of Education Stephen O’Sullivan said. “Helen will be missed dearly.”
