PVNC Catholic honours Treaties Recognition Week: November 2–8, 2025

Oct. 30, 2025

During Treaties Recognition Week, from Nov. 2–8, 2025, the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington (PVNC) Catholic District School Board joins school boards across Ontario in honouring the importance of treaties and the ongoing relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples.

Treaties Recognition Week, established in Ontario in 2016, encourages all Ontarians to learn more about the treaties that form the foundation of our province and to deepen understanding of the rights and responsibilities that come with them.

At PVNC Catholic, classroom resources have been provided to support students and educators in learning about treaties, the history of local First Nations, and the responsibilities we all share as treaty people.

In October and November of 1923, the Williams Treaties were signed by the governments of Canada and seven Anishinaabe First Nations, which included the Michi Saagiig of the north shore of Lake Ontario and the Chippewa of Lake Simcoe.

The seven Williams Treaties First Nations are:

  • Alderville First Nation
  • Curve Lake First Nation
  • Hiawatha First Nation
  • Chippewas of Beausoleil First Nation
  • Chippewas of Georgina Island First Nation
  • Chippewas of Rama First Nation
  • Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation

The land on which PVNC Catholic schools stand is situated within these treaty areas.
