Ours to Tell: February is Black History Month
Jan. 31, 2025
February is Black History Month and this year’s theme is “Ours to Tell.”
Black History Month is about commemorating and celebrating the efforts and achievements of Black Canadians who have made tremendous strides, but also the everyday people whose names don’t always get printed in history books.
Reflecting on our theme “Ours to Tell”, Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington (PVNC) Catholic District School Board understands that Black history is not distinctly separate from our collective Canadian history.
“Black History Month is not only a time to celebrate the historical achievements of Black individuals but also an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to creating an inclusive and equitable environment for all our students,” said Stephen O’Sullivan, Director of Education. “At PVNC Catholic, we will continue to create meaningful opportunities to celebrate and honour the cultures and histories of the Black community. Our differences unite us.”
At PVNC Catholic, we reflect on our teaching of solidarity which calls us to disrupt erasures of Black excellence and heritage and to cultivate an environment where everyone can thrive.
Further, in demonstrating our continued commitment to identity affirming Catholic schools, culturally relevant and responsive resources have been created to support the learning of Canadian Black history, culture and joy.
PVNC Catholic schools will be planning individual assemblies and events to commemorate Black History Month.
This February and year-round, join us as we honour the contributions of Black people in our country and champion the opportunities, access and dreams for generations to come.
