Fostering Inclusivity: St. Patrick CES receives new buddy bench
Feb. 21, 2025
St. Patrick Catholic Elementary School in Peterborough will soon have a new addition to the school yard to promote inclusivity.
On Thursday (Feb. 21, 2025), members of the Rotary Club of Peterborough Kawartha, in partnership with Park Place Financial and Taylors Recycled Plastic Products, donated a new buddy bench to the school.
“This kind of donation shows the Rotary Club’s commitment to supporting the community, promoting positive social interactions among students, and helping create a welcoming and inclusive environment at our school,” said Lisa Gemmiti-Folz, St. Patrick CES Principal. “It complements the work of the Rotary Club of Peterborough Kawartha and PVNC Catholic’s commitment in serving others.”
Buddy benches are designed to combat loneliness and bullying in schools.
Children can sit on the bench to indicate that they are feeling lonely or isolated and need another child to reach out to them.
Using the buddy bench on the playground can encourage students to look out for one another so no one feels left out.
Grade 8 students Mackenzie Edge, Noah Ward, Phoenix Walker and Kian McGuire all read thank you letters to the Rotarians, while Kindergarten students sat on the new colourful bench in the front foyer of the school.
“This thoughtful addition will make a big difference in helping kids feel welcomed, valued and supported,” Noah said.
“The St. Patrick’s Kindergarten class is so excited for the buddy bench,” added Phoenix.
The plan is to relocate the bench to the Kindergarten yard in the spring.
