Everyday Hero Banner

Feb. 21, 2025

We are honoured to present this week’s Everyday Heroes for the 2024-2025 school year.

Our everyday heroes are the epitome of compassion, devotion and care, transforming everyday tasks into extraordinary impacts.

Their subtle yet powerful actions not only elevate the experiences of colleagues but also enrich the lives of the students we proudly serve. They are more than just supportive adults or empathetic peers; they are the vibrant pulse of our educational community, profoundly touching the lives of all they encounter.

Our everyday heroes come in all forms, quietly making a difference in our schools and board offices, yet very often they overlook or downplay their own actions.

This week we are celebrating Chris Heitzner, Catherine Kelly, and Sarah Pazienza.

Chris Heitzner

Chris Heitzner Chris is a teacher at St. Stephen CSS in Bowmanville.

Chris was nominated by a colleague, who said:

Chris Heitzner is more than a coach, teacher, and first aid responder, he consistently goes above and beyond to support students both on and off the field.

As a coach, Chris is deeply committed to his players’ growth—not just as athletes, but as individuals. His philosophy extends beyond winning; he fosters resilience, teamwork, and integrity in every student he mentors. His dedication is evident in the late hours he spends ensuring every athlete gets the time and guidance they need, long after the parking lot has emptied.

Beyond coaching, Chris serves as one of the school’s first aid responders, stepping in during emergencies with a calm, reassuring presence. In moments of crisis, his quick thinking and steady demeanour have made a real difference for students and staff alike.

As a gym teacher, Chris brings the same energy to his classes, making physical education a place where students feel encouraged, supported, and challenged to be their best. His impact extends far beyond the gym or the sidelines—he helps shape young people into responsible, confident, and compassionate members of society.

William Wordsworth once said, “The best portion of a good man’s life is his little, nameless, unremembered acts of kindness and love.” Chris exemplifies this sentiment every day, in the quiet moments of encouragement, the extra hours spent mentoring students, and the steady leadership he provides in times of need.”

Catherine Kelly

Catherine Kelly Catherine is a custodian at St. Joseph CES in Douro.

Catherine was nominated by a colleague, who said:

“I would like to nominate Catherine Kelly. Catherine arrived at our wonderful school, St. Joseph, Douro, in May 2024 as our custodian. Since her arrival she has made such a big impact on our students and staff.
Catherine is so willing to help when needed and never complains. She goes above and beyond to make our school clean, safe and a place we are proud of. She enriches our school with her energy, enthusiasm and humour.
Thank you for your dedication
Thank you for caring and,
Thank you for putting our students first by always having a safe and clean place for them to learn.
Once again Catherine, we appreciate all of the hard work that you do for our school.”

Sarah Pazienza

Sarah Pazienza Sarah is an educational assistant at St. Francis of Assisi in Newcastle.

Sarah was nominated by a colleague, who said:

“Sarah Pazienza truly deserves the PVNCCDSB Everyday Hero award for her unwavering dedication and exceptional contributions as an educational assistant at St. Francis. Her hardworking nature and commitment to her role ensure that every student receives the support they need. Sarah’s patience and kindness shine through in every interaction, and she has a quiet, peaceful presence that puts both students and staff at ease. Her ability to create a calm and welcoming environment is invaluable, and the school simply wouldn’t run as smoothly without her. Despite her many strengths, Sarah is very modest. When her work is complemented or Sarah’s care and compassion make a lasting impact on everyone she works with, making her a true everyday hero.”

We would like to thank Chris, Catherine and Sarah for their commitment to creating a culture of faith, hope and love to ensure equity and well-being at our board.
