Everyday Heroes: Kevin Walchuk, Elaine Dickson, and Shannon Bevis
Mar. 6, 2025
We are honoured to present this week’s Everyday Heroes for the 2024-2025 school year.
Our everyday heroes are the epitome of compassion, devotion and care, transforming everyday tasks into extraordinary impacts.
Their subtle yet powerful actions not only elevate the experiences of colleagues but also enrich the lives of the students we proudly serve. They are more than just supportive adults or empathetic peers; they are the vibrant pulse of our educational community, profoundly touching the lives of all they encounter.
Our everyday heroes come in all forms, quietly making a difference in our schools and board offices, yet very often they overlook or downplay their own actions.
This week we are celebrating Kevin Walchuk, Elaine Dickson, and Shannon Bevis.

Kevin is a teacher at St. Stephen CSS in Bowmanville.
Kevin was nominated by a colleague, who said:
“St. Stephen’s Kevin Walchuk works at the Centre for Success at Durham College, where he consistently goes above and beyond to support his students. His kindness and patience create a welcoming and supportive environment for all. Kevin advocates tirelessly for his students, ensuring they have the resources and opportunities needed to succeed. One of the ways he exemplifies his dedication is by volunteering to supervise students on March Break trips, providing them with unique, enriching learning experiences outside of the classroom. Kevin is also a strong support for his colleagues, always willing to lend a helping hand, share ideas, and offer guidance when needed. His collaborative spirit fosters a positive and encouraging work environment. Through his selflessness and commitment to student success, Kevin is an invaluable member of the educational community. His everyday acts of kindness and dedication make him a hero in every sense of the word.” |

Elaine is a Educational Assistant (EA) at St. Mary CES in Grafton.
Elaine was nominated by a colleague, who said:
“Elaine is the epitome of an “Everyday Hero” at St. Mary School. As an exceptional Educational Assistant, she consistently puts in 110% effort, no matter the challenges she faces. Her passion for her work shines through as she creates a consistent and supportive environment where students always know they are cared for. Elaine is not only highly knowledgeable but also a lifelong learner, constantly reflecting on her practice to better understand and support each student. Her nurturing nature and commitment to her role go beyond her job description, as she is always willing to do whatever it takes to make St. Mary School a better place for all.” |
Shannon Bevis
 |
Shannon is a Secretary at St. Anne CES in Peterborough.
Shannon was nominated by a colleague, who said:
“It is no secret that the ‘heartbeat’ of St. Anne’s school is secretary Shannon Bevis. Not only has Shannon learned the skills needed to perform every single task required, she did so at lightning speed. Also incredible is her ability to know every student’s name, class and pick up schedule, especially since the school is so large and busy. Shannon has a ‘can do’ attitude and never complains about the workload. But her biggest contribution to the school is her bubbly disposition, welcoming manner, compassion for the students and sense of humour.
We are particularly grateful to Shannon for how she treats everyone with compassion and with patience. Thank you, Shannon, you are VERY deserving.”‘
