Everyday Heroes: Jill Romain, Anne Helferty, and Laura Borecki

Apr. 25, 2025

We are honoured to present this week’s Everyday Heroes for the 2024-2025 school year.

Our everyday heroes are the epitome of compassion, devotion and care, transforming everyday tasks into extraordinary impacts.

Their subtle yet powerful actions not only elevate the experiences of colleagues but also enrich the lives of the students we proudly serve. They are more than just supportive adults or empathetic peers; they are the vibrant pulse of our educational community, profoundly touching the lives of all they encounter.

Our everyday heroes come in all forms, quietly making a difference in our schools and board offices, yet very often they overlook or downplay their own actions.

This week we are celebrating Jill Romain, Anne Helferty, and Laura Borecki.

Jill Romain

Jill Romain Jill is a Teacher at St. Elizabeth CES in Bowmanville.

Jill was nominated by a colleague, who said:

“Jill Romain is a perfect example of an Everyday Hero. She comes to work everyday with a smile on her face, a positive attitude and a zest for teaching. She is adored by her students, past and present, and cherished by her colleagues. Jill has the ability to be a team player and a leader, she can manage a parent meeting with grace and professionalism while making everyone feel welcomed and heard. Her abilities as a teacher shine through the smiles and admiration of her students. She is constantly busy developing and delivering amazing content to her students that encourage and foster a thirst for knowledge. She is always willing to try something new and leads by example.
If asked Jill will tell you “Everyone is welcome in her classroom.” Every morning the class starts their day by saying “Good morning” to each adult in the room, from her teaching partner to the EA, the co-op student, the weekly Star Student and to any guest in the room. Everyone feels like they belong and are welcomed.
The St. Elizabeth community and PVNCCDSB have been blessed to have such a positive role model that exemplifies the holistic educational values we hope all of our students develop in their educational journeys.”

Anne’s ability to connect with students in a genuine, authentic way sets her apart. She doesn’t just teach; she listens, understands, and builds meaningful relationships that help students thrive. Her approach to mentorship is rooted in empathy, trust, and respect, creating an environment where students feel supported and valued. Whether through student council activities or one-on-one interactions, Anne’s influence is felt in the way students engage with school and each other.

She works hand-in-hand with staff and students to ensure the goals outlined in the school’s CSIPSAW (Comprehensive School Improvement Plan and School Action Plan) are not just met but exceeded. Her initiatives are a testament to her commitment to fostering a positive, inclusive school culture where students are encouraged to reach their full potential.

As the Co-op teacher, Anne takes on a leadership role that empowers students to gain invaluable work-life experience. Through her guidance, countless students have had the opportunity to apply their skills in real-world settings, preparing them for the future and giving them the confidence to pursue their career goals. Anne’s efforts in the Co-op program are essential in helping students bridge the gap between education and employment, ensuring they are equipped with both the practical experience and the interpersonal skills needed to succeed.
