Everyday Heroes: Bill McGuinness, Ashley Henderson, and Shannon Sturgess
Feb. 27, 2026
We are honoured to present this week’s Everyday Heroes for the 2025-2026 school year.
Our everyday heroes are the epitome of compassion, devotion and care, transforming everyday tasks into extraordinary impacts.
Their subtle yet powerful actions not only elevate the experiences of colleagues but also enrich the lives of the students we proudly serve. They are more than just supportive adults or empathetic peers; they are the vibrant pulse of our educational community, profoundly touching the lives of all they encounter.
Our everyday heroes come in all forms, quietly making a difference in our schools and board offices, yet very often they overlook or downplay their own actions.
This week we are celebrating Bill McGuinness, Ashley Henderson, and Shannon Sturgess.

Bill is a Teacher at St. Mary CES in Campbellford.
Bill was nominated by a colleague, who said:
“Bill McGuinness is our school’s unanimous NUMBER ONE choice for the Everyday Hero Award.
Students and staff alike, recognize the legacy that Mr. McGuinness is leaving here at St. Mary School in Campbellford. Bill is not only an excellent role model for his students, former and present, but also has a positive influence on every person in our school community. His interactions with others are always characterized by dignity and respect. He cares for his students as though they were his very own children, and never misses an opportunity to offer encouragement. When his ‘kids’ hit the mark, he openly celebrates their achievements with joy. Colleagues repeatedly remark that Bill treats others as full partners in the goal of seeing every student succeed. Bill is truly a team player.
In addition to maintaining high academic standards in the classroom, Bill organizes and runs extracurricular sports and intramurals, and he always leads with kindness and a good sense of humor that helps the students connect with him. Bill is an expert at relationship building, classroom management, and finding ways to reach those students who don’t always conform to a particular set of expectations. His presence in our school has made a huge impact on others, both staff and students.
For all these reasons, and many many more, the staff of St. Mary School in Campbellford agree that Bill McGuinness is the Everyday Hero of the year!” |

Ashley is an Educational Assistant (EA) at St. Luke CES in Downeyville.
Ashley was nominated by a colleague, who said:
“Ashley is a kind, patient, hard working and resilient staff member who shows up every single day with a smile on her face.
Her ability to remain calm under pressure and continue to support others in times of need, is another reason she is most deserving of the Everyday Hero Award and sets her apart from others. She brings her best to work every day, even when things are tough. She works with our most vulnerable students in the most loving way. The students adore her and look forward to seeing her smiling face greet them off of the bus every morning.
Her talent in the area of Arts has helped out our little school tremendously! Ashley even cut several wood panels, with her dad’s help, into Christmas trees to paint and decorate for our Christmas concert, going above and beyond her job description! She is most deserving of this award as she spreads happiness, joy, optimism, kindness, love, hope and faith everywhere she goes!” |
Shannon Sturgess

Shannon is an Educational Assistant (EA) at St. Anne CES in Peterborough.
Shannon was nominated by a colleague, who said:
“When I think of an Everyday Hero, Shannon Sturgess immediately comes to mind.
Shannon always brings positive energy to each day, despite challenges and unpredictability. She is always willing to help any student or staff member, whether with academics and behaviours, situations on the yard, or listening to someone in a time of need. Shannon takes on the challenges of being an Educational Assistant with passion, care, and dedication, and is always putting the needs of the students and school community first.
If you need a coworker to laugh with, or listen to a problem without judgement, Shannon is the person to go to! With a friendly smile, Shannon quietly does the most amazing job, never seeking recognition. She is a true asset to our school and an inspiration to us all!” |
We would like to thank Bill, Ashley and Shannon for their commitment to creating a culture of faith, hope and love to ensure equity and well-being at our board.
