On Monday, Dec. 8, students and staff from St. Mary Catholic Secondary School came together in downtown Cobourg to support the Community Christmas Dinner.

It’s a collaboration between St. Mary and the Greenwood Coalition.

Throughout the day, culinary students prepared food for the gathering, while staff and student volunteers later arrived to set up, serve meals, share conversation, sing, and help clean up.

While the logistics were carefully planned, what unfolded went far beyond expectations.

Community members, including those experiencing homelessness, arrived carrying their belongings in bags.

Within the warmth of the church basement, they were welcomed with hot, nourishing food, kindness, and compassion.

Guests received meals to enjoy on site and to take with them, along with socks, mittens, and hats — small gestures that carried deep meaning on a cold December night.

What emerged was something truly special: relationships formed, laughter shared, and a genuine sense of humanity and gratitude experienced by everyone present.
