Elected in 2018 as City of Peterborough Trustee, Leal says he’s seeking new opportunities elsewhere

Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington (PVNC) Catholic District School Board Chairperson Braden Leal has announced he will not be seeking re-election in the upcoming municipal election.

“With the municipal election fast approaching, I have been reflecting upon the next phase of my journey. I have decided that I will not be running for a trustee position in October. Instead, I will be looking at new opportunities,” Leal said.

Leal, a PVNC graduate, has served as PVNC chairperson since Dec. 1, 2021. He was elected as a first-time trustee for the City of Peterborough in the 2018 municipal election. He served as vice-chairperson from October to December 2021 before being elected as chairperson.

“It has been an honour to serve in this leadership role, to have the opportunity to represent the school board in which I was educated,” Leal said. “I would like to thank my fellow trustees, Director of Education Joan Carragher and all the members of our PVNC community, including the excellent administrators, educators and support staff who make our Catholic schools so special. I am grateful for the learning, the leadership experiences, and the relationships that we have built over my tenure.”

Director of Education Joan Carragher thanked Leal for his leadership as the Board navigated pandemic-related school closures to the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions and the ongoing recovery process.

“Braden took on the top leadership position in the most challenging of times. As a proud PVNC graduate, he has been a steadfast champion for our schools and Catholic Education in our region. We wish him all the best as he takes on new opportunities and we encourage any eligible candidates with a passion for Catholic Education in our region to consider applying for a trustee role before the Aug. 19 deadline.”

Election Day in Ontario municipalities is Monday, October 24, 2022. The deadline to file a nomination to be a school trustee candidate is Friday, August 19, 2022 at 2 p.m.
