Newcomer students experience Canadian winter traditions at event at Jackson Park
Feb. 24, 2025
On Feb. 7, 2025, 35 secondary school students from at least eight different countries took part in a fun-filled winter day at Jackson Park in Peterborough, embracing Canadian winter traditions such as snowshoeing and other seasonal games.
The event, supported by the New Canadians Centre, brought together students from Holy Cross and St. Peter Catholic secondary schools.
For many, it was the first time they had been on snowshoes.
“Everyone had so much fun trying something new and meeting new friends,” said Tanya Kranc and Pam O’Brien, Multilingual Language Learner Itinerant teachers. “We will continue to find opportunities like this for our newcomer students.”
After braving the cold, the students gathered for a warm lunch, with St. Peter CSS serving hot chocolate, pizza and cookies.
The afternoon was spent playing table games, offering a chance to relax, connect and build new friendships.
As the event wrapped up, many students forged new bonds with peers who shared similar experiences transitioning to life and school in Canada.
