Anti-bullying through collaboration: Grade 7 students take part in workshop with community partners

Groups of students rotated through themed workshop stations designed to educate and empower students about bullying prevention and intervention.

On Monday (Jan. 13, 2025), Grade 7 students at St. Dominic Catholic Elementary School in Lindsay participated in an informative anti-bullying workshop hosted by the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington (PVNC) Catholic District School Board and Trillium Lakelands District School Board (TLDSB).

It was made possible through the collaboration of several key community organizations including the Kawartha Lakes Police Service (KLPS), Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), CHIMO Youth & Family Services, Boys and Girls Club of Kawartha Lakes (BGCKL), and the John Howard Society.

This event, which was organized with the goal of promoting safety and well-being among students, included four stations:

Crime Prevention and Restorative Justice: Presented by BGCKL & Police (KLPS & OPP)

Students learned about restorative justice as an approach to addressing bullying and the situations that may lead to involvement in the justice system.

Cyberbullying & Online Safety: Presented by CHIMO Youth & Family Services

Students learned the definition of cyberbullying, its effects on young people in schools, and how to prevent it. Students engaged in discussions about online safety and how to access support if they need it.

Peers & Influences: Presented by the John Howard Society

Students explored the role friendships play in their happiness, behaviour choices and life direction. They also learned strategies to seek and maintain positive relationships. 

Reporting Bullying at School: Presented by a TLDSB Mental Health Counsellor

Students learned about the importance of reporting bullying at school and explored the available options for doing so.

The goal of the anti-bullying workshop was to promote safety and wellbeing among students by:

  • Educating students about bullying by engaging them in open discussions on peer influence and bullying behaviors.
  • To inform students about the risks, harms and consequences associated with bullying.
  • To address the stigma surrounding bullying and provide guidance on how to report concerns.
