Student Voice: What Does Lent Mean to You?

Mar. 5, 2025

Lent is a sacred season in the Catholic Church, offering a time of spiritual renewal and preparation for the celebration of Easter.

As outlined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, Lent focuses on the essential themes of penance, fasting, prayer, and almsgiving.

Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington (PVNC) Catholic District School Board asked students at Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School, what Lent means to them.

“Lent is a time to be able to reflect and grow and it also is a time to step back and think about what really matters,” said Elizabeth Coulter, Grade 11 student. “It might not be only fasting or sacrificing something, but a time to spend with your family and also to connect with your faith.”

“Lent, to me, is a time of renewal and sacrifice. It’s about us learning our way and learning to help others. It’s an important time to be connected to God,” said Gracie Hughes, Grade 12 student.

“Lent is a period in which we prepare for Easter. It’s a period where we celebrate the events leading to Jesus’ death and it’s a period of fasting, prayers and giving alms,” added Goodluck Akinboye, Grade 11 student.

“Lent is a time of personal reflection for me. Although it can mean fasting for many people, for me it’s bettering my connection to God and Jesus and reflecting on the time He spent for us, so we can do all the amazing things we do today,” said Holly Heuchert, Grade 12 student.

“Lent, to me, is a time to slow down and really think about what matters,” said Neha Mervin, Grade 10 student. “It’s a chance for me to connect with my faith and reflect on my choices and just try to be better everyday.”

“For me, Lent is a time to step back from the busyness of life and reflect on yourself and your faith. It’s a time to renew your faith and grow with it,” added Sarah Bochniak, Grade 10 student.
