Student leaders shine at annual Student Council Liaison Committee Retreat
Dec. 5, 2024
The annual Student Council Liaison Committee (SCLC) retreat, held on Tuesday at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School in Cobourg, is one of four events planned each year to bring school councils together.
Decked out in light blue shirts reading “Voices that Aspire”, leaders from all six Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington (PVNC) Catholic District School Board’s secondary school councils took part in a day of networking and activities.
The SCLC, which includes student trustees, junior and senior reps from all six schools, a trustee, principals and the Director of Education, meets monthly to discuss student issues within the board and beyond.
In addition to the junior and senior student trustees, who attend Regular Board meetings each month and provide feedback directly to Trustees, the SCLC is one of the key ways in which students provide their input and voice to the Board’s senior leadership and elected officials.
“We, as students, are there every single day. Living and breathing in school. So, it’s extremely important. We carry our own perspectives and it’s important to share those perspectives to the Board, so they can make the best decisions possible,” said Carter Peios, Junior Student Trustee.
“You can never have enough leaders because everyone has a different leadership style even of themselves,” added Claire Heitzner, Senior Student Trustee. “If we all come together, even the small changes we can make in our own lives will add up to a bigger change – more of a tidal wave of change – to make every community, or the future, a better place to be in.”
