St. Teresa CES Kindergarten students create edible sun catchers to help winter birds

Students in Rebecca Westlake and Janet Hickey’s Kindergarten class at St. Teresa Catholic Elementary School embarked on a creative and educational project that combined science and art while helping feed winter birds.
The students crafted ice sun catchers that served as bird feeders.
“We had a wonderful time exploring the concepts of migration and winter survival in birds. We learned how some birds migrate to warmer places, while others stay with us through the cold months,” said Westlake, Kindergarten teacher and Hickey, Early Childhood Educator. “This sparked a thoughtful discussion with the children and our educators about how we, as part of our community, can contribute to making it easier for winter birds to access food.”
The students explored scientific concepts such as how cold temperatures transform water from a liquid into a solid as ice.
Inspired by this, the students froze fruit and seeds in water-filled molds.
“Then, we let the freezing temperatures do their work, turning the water into sparkling ice creations. Once frozen, we hung the sun catchers outside, ready to catch sunlight and offer a snack for our feathered friends.”
Through this activity, the students learned about belonging and contributing – not only in the classroom – but within our environment.
The students reflected on how their actions could help create a welcoming space for birds during the chilly winter months.
“The added bonus? These sun catchers look stunning when the sunlight hits them, adding a touch of natural beauty to the season!”
