St. Joseph CES in Bowmanville hosts vibrant Multicultural Fair to celebrate diversity and student heritage

Earlier this spring, St. Joseph Catholic Elementary School in Bowmanville celebrated multiculturalism with a fair.
It was the culmination of Multicultural Week, and there were a few goals that the school wanted to accomplish, which included celebrating diversity, allowing students to have a voice and making stronger connections with families.
“What we decided as a school community was to explore all of our students’ backgrounds, their heritages and their cultures through projects that they did in every single class,” said Lisa Heitzner, Principal.
Some students did visual representations of their findings, interviews and research in a gallery in the gymnasium as part of the multicultural fair.
“Students from all classes came by to see them,” Heitzner added. “They were very excited to know they weren’t the only ones doing this project, it was every single class in this school.”
All students were also asked to design or colour flags to represent their cultural heritage which were displayed all over the school.
“It was a lovely opportunity and it was great to see the smiles on the kids’ faces as they learned about themselves and have pride in who they are,” Heitzner added.
