St. Catherine Catholic Elementary School hosts Canadian citizenship reaffirmation ceremony

On May 6, 2025, the gymnasium at St. Catherine Catholic Elementary School in Peterborough was transformed into a courtroom for the Rotary Club of Peterborough-Kawartha’s annual citizen reaffirmation ceremony.
Students in Grades 5 through 8, along with staff, gathered to reaffirm their loyalty and commitment to Canada in a ceremony presided over by retired Justice Alan Ingram.
Justice Ingram spoke passionately about his pride in Canada, highlighting the country’s natural beauty and its legacy of innovation.
Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington (PVNC) Catholic District School Board Director of Education Stephen O’Sullivan also addressed the assembly, emphasizing the crucial role schools play in shaping active, engaged citizens.
“Today’s school day started as all others do, with the playing of Canada’s National Anthem,” O’Sullivan said.
“That slice of Canadian pride that begins each day is so important for our staff and students alike. It’s a reminder of how fortunate we are to attend school in a safe, accepting, and welcoming society that embraces diversity.”
For over 20 years, the Rotary Club of Peterborough-Kawartha has brought this ceremony to local schools.
Each spring, one Catholic and one public school host the event, which mirrors an official Citizenship Court.
Each student received a certificate recognizing their reaffirmation of Canadian citizenship.
