For the past eight years, students at Monsignor Leo Cleary Catholic Elementary School in Courtice have been lacing up their running shoes and hitting the field each lunch recess as part of the school’s popular Run Club.

Launched in 2016 by Grade 8 teacher Sabrina Morra, the program encourages students to stay active and set personal goals by running laps around the school field from the first week of September until the third week of October.

Each lap earns a popsicle stick, with every two laps equaling one kilometre.

Students track their progress, earning milestone certificates at every 10 kilometres and their achievements are proudly displayed on the school’s “Run Club Wall of Fame.”

This fall, Grade 8 student Sam Bentley reached an impressive 130 kilometres, setting a new school record and surpassing the previous 100-kilometre mark held by two former students.

“I’ve been told by parents that these certificates hang in their child’s room years after they receive them, and some have told me that I’ve turned their child into a lifelong runner,” said Morra. “This information warms my heart and motivates me to continue this amazing program. I love being able to share my passion of running and healthy living with the students of MLC and feel blessed knowing I’m making a positive impact on their lives.”

In addition to the Run Club, the school also participates in the Marathon Jr. Program, which gives students in Grades 4 to 8 the opportunity to complete a full marathon distance of 42.2 kilometres.

Those who log at least 37.2 kilometres during Run Club are invited to take part in the TCS Toronto Waterfront Marathon 5K event, which was held on October 18, 2025.

“This year, I had 18 students run with me, two of which were my own children. I’ve gone to this event seven times now: 2016, 2018, 2019, 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025,” added Morra. “I am so proud of the hard work and dedication of all of the students and I hope my story inspires others”.

The program, supported by various sponsors, is free for students and staff and includes race entry, T-shirts, medals, and transportation.

Parents are also welcome to join at a discounted rate.
