Protecting Kids from Extreme Heat and Poor Air Quality this Summer

As we head into the summer months, our local Public Health partners (Peterborough Public Health, Haliburton Kawartha Pine Ridge District Health Unit, and Durham Region Health Department) have provided the following resources and tips to support parents/guardians should exxtreme heat events and/or poor air quality conditions continue to happen over the summer.

During times of extreme heat, parents and caregivers are encouraged to:
✔ Keep children hydrated
✔ Keep indoor environments cool
✔ Avoid outdoor activities during peak heat

How to Prepare:
🧠 Be more aware of:

  • Daily weather conditions

  • Your child’s specific health risks

  • Signs of heat-related illness in kids (can include sleepiness or irritability)

  • Strategies for staying cool: Heat Hacks

🧊 Have a plan to:

  • Stay cool (at home or in public spaces)

  • Stay hydrated (especially during power outages)

  • Stay connected (check on elderly friends or family)

  • Ensure an adequate supply of medications for those with chronic conditions

Air Quality Matters Too
Wildfire smoke and heat events can worsen air quality, posing added risks. Monitor local conditions at Air Quality Ontario and plan outdoor time wisely.

Even at low levels, wildfire smoke can affect health. Those with respiratory conditions should take added care and consult health professionals if needed.
