On Friday (Sept. 19, 2025), a delegation from Norway visited Cobourg to celebrate the life and legacy of Fern Blodgett Sunde.

Fern, who grew up in Cobourg, became the first Canadian woman to serve as a wireless radio operator at sea during the Second World War.

She is remembered both in Canada and abroad with bronze statues — one at Cobourg’s waterfront and another in her hometown in Norway.

As part of the commemoration, St. Mary Catholic Secondary School was presented with a copy of Happy Mosdale by Eiliv Odde Hauge.

The book chronicles the voyage of a Norwegian ship crossing the Atlantic during the war and highlights the vital support it received from Fern Blodgett Sunde, a true pioneer.

“Our school was thankful and blessed to be included in the ceremony honouring the contribution of a female trailblazer – Fern Blodgett (later Sunde),” said Jill Barker, St, Mary CSS Principal. “Fern was an inspiration for many women who were supporting the war effort and a proud member of the Northumberland community. Her commitment, courage, and resilience is an example for all of us.”

The event highlighted Fern’s remarkable achievements and ensured her story continues to inspire new generations in both Canada and Norway.

“We sincerely thank the organizers at the Mayor’s office and the Cobourg Museum Foundation for their efforts to bring this event to life,” Barker added.
