Monsignor Leo Cleary Catholic Elementary School in Courtice has reached the pinnacle of environmental excellence through EcoSchools Canada national program, earning Platinum EcoSchools certification.

In its notification, EcoSchools praised the school’s “inspiring commitment to biodiversity” and awarded a $1,000 School Ground Greening Grant to support the planting of native species in the natural space that the school created in the corner of the backfield.

“This extraordinary accomplishment is a true testament to the dedication, creativity, and perseverance of our entire school community—our incredible students, committed staff, and supportive parents,” said Ian Kruis, Principal. “Our efforts in reducing waste through innovative composting programs and our impactful anti-idling campaign to improve air quality were particularly noted.”

This milestone caps a journey that included a $2,500 grant and EcoSchools Canada Award for sustainability projects. Students and staff used those funds to:

  • Construct a raised garden bed in the kindergarten yard with help from Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School students, teaching young learners the basics of gardening.
  • Create a natural space in the backfield, planting trees and shrubs donated by Witzke’s Greenhouse to boost local biodiversity.
  • Explore soil health through a visit from Pure Life Soil, where students discovered the vital role worms play in healthy ecosystems and started a school worm‑composting program.
  • Build birdhouses and a butterfly habitat to expand its commitment to environmental education.

“Joining over 1,900 schools nationwide, we are actively creating a positive environmental impact, fostering hope and resilience for the future,” Kruis said. “This Platinum award is a source of immense pride and a powerful motivator to continue our journey as environmental stewards.  We would like to challenge other schools to do the same next year!”
