May 2 to May 7 is Catholic Education Week

As part of Catholic Education Week, which runs May 2 to May 7, Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington Catholic District School Board (PVNC) will be honouring 38 students with a Catholic Student Leadership Award.

Typically, Catholic Student Leadership award recipients are recognized during an evening ceremony on the Wednesday of Catholic Education Week where family, friends, teachers and principals can attend and share in the celebration.

With schools closed and physical distancing measures in place, however, we are unable to host a physical ceremony this year, but we want to make sure our award recipients receive the recognition they deserve and we want to provide an opportunity for the whole PVNC community to participate.

On Wednesday, May 5, beginning at 5 p.m., we plan to honour this year’s award winners by announcing them on the Board’s Twitter account (@PVNCCDSB). Each winner will be announced by school community. The synchronous event will allow school communities and families to take part and engage in the celebration in real time. You do not need a Twitter account to view the celebration.

Recipients have been selected by the staff at their school as being the student who most exemplifies the Catholic Graduate Expectations. They show leadership, kindness, compassion and collaboration. They contribute to their school community and they respect the dignity of all and serve as a role model for others in our Catholic school community.

“These award winners are true role models who embody the goals of our Catholic Graduate Expectations,” said David Bernier, Chairperson of the Board. “Unfortunately, we cannot honour these students in person this year, but we hope to provide a much-deserved spotlight by announcing award recipients online and paying tribute to the student leaders in our schools while reflecting on the importance of faith in our lives, and the role it plays in Catholic education.”

During Catholic Education Week, PVNC will celebrate the significant contribution that Catholic Education has made to the community, the province and to Canada. Our Catholic Graduate Expectations challenge students to articulate in society those fundamental values that underpin Catholic education.

The theme for this year’s Catholic Education Week is: Nurturing Hope.
