Grade 8s at St. John CES lead school-wide soccer tournament

Grade 8 students at St. John CES organized a school-wide soccer tournament for this morning.

With the absence of organized sports within elementary schools, students took to planning a morning of fun for all grade levels.

“This whole day has come together because of our student leadership,” says principal Jennifer Wright. “It allowed the students to have the opportunity to get involved and help others around the school. The grade 8 class and their teacher has been involved in everything including organizing the tournament, reffing the games, coaching students up until today, and organizing the concession stands. It has been nice seeing them step up and take on the challenge, and they are so great with the younger students.”

“In the beginning, we got every student at the school and made teams for each primary, junior, and intermediate level. We coloured the teams and made the schedule for the day,” says Reed.

Students also had an opportunity to purchase snacks from a concession stand organized by grade 8 students with funds going towards their end-of-the-year trip.

“Our favourite part was definitely coaching and refereeing the games,” says Reed, as Madalyn and Tara agree. “It was nice seeing the students have fun with each other.”
