Everyday Heroes: Lisa Hiltz, Jeff Roote, and Laura Di Ianni
We are honoured to present this week’s Everyday Heroes for the 2023/24 school year.
Our everyday heroes are the epitome of compassion, devotion and care, transforming everyday tasks into extraordinary impacts.
Their subtle yet powerful actions not only elevate the experiences of colleagues but also enrich the lives of the students we proudly serve. They are more than just supportive adults or empathetic peers; they are the vibrant pulse of our educational community, profoundly touching the lives of all they encounter.
Our everyday heroes come in all forms, quietly making a difference in our schools and board offices, yet very often they overlook or downplay their own actions.
This week we are celebrating Lisa Hiltz, Jeff Roote, and Laura Di Ianni.
Lisa Hiltz
Lisa is the Learning Commons Specialist at Monsignor O’Donoghue CES. Lisa was nominated by a colleague, who said:
“Lisa is an outstanding Learning Commons Specialist who goes above and beyond to support our students, school community and staff. In addition to fostering a love of reading within our students. She helps students navigate digital literacy and provides students with a safe, calm and engaging environment in the Learning Commons. In addition to her regular duties, she goes above and beyond in helping staff as our computer site administrator. She provides a daily games club for students to engage in at recesses. She collaborates with fellow staff members to further the learning that takes place at our school. As a member of the Social Committee, she makes meaningful connections and celebrates the accomplishments and milestones in our staff family, while also helping those in need. She also serves as a Faith Ambassador and FNMI Representative for our school. She is very active in both of those roles. She is truly an example of servant leadership and always does what is best for our school. Thank you Lisa, for playing an important role in making Monsignor O’Donoghue CES a great place to be!” |
Jeff Roote
Jeff is the Custodian at St. Catherine CES. Jeff was nominated by a colleague, who said:
“Jeff Roote is our school’s everyday hero at St.Catherine Elementary. Every day, he goes above and beyond to care for our school, students, and staff. He always has a smile on his face and a laugh to share. He is eager to help out the students when they are in need, including when they need their soccer or basketball inflated. He makes lasting connections with the students he interacts with, going the extra mile to make them feel comfortable at our school (fist bumps included). He keeps our school safe, clean, and running in tip-top shape. Anytime a staff member needs something, whether it be paper towels, desk height adjustments, extra chairs, soap dispenser refills, or even an emergency floor mopping, Jeff is always there and happy to help. Even though he works in a french immersion school, he proudly displays his Toronto Maple Leafs collection in his office. GO JEFF GO!!!” |
Laura Di Ianni
Laura is a Vice-Principal at Holy Trinity CSS. Laura was nominated by a colleague, who said:
“Laura is new to Holy Trinity this year, but she brings a student-centred approach to her pedagogy. She brings fresh ideas and a strong knowledge of and awareness of special education. She is always welcoming, very easy to talk to. In my almost 20 years of teaching I have never seen any staff member connect with our youth as she does. I have never seen any staff member ever approach and connect with struggling students as she does. She is not afraid. She cares. She has a strong and calm and pensive nature about her. She is a wonderful role model for our female staff. She is very intelligent and the staff feel safe talking to her. We are so lucky as a board to have her on the team. She needs to be recognized for her intellect regarding special education policy and procedure, her empathetic approach, and her leadership style.” |
We would like to thank Lisa, Jeff, and Laura for their commitment to creating a culture of faith, hope and love to ensure equity and well-being at our board.
