Everyday Heroes: Trent Sage, Amanda McInnes, and Michael DeMaeyer

June 20, 2025

We are honoured to present this week’s Everyday Heroes for the 2024-2025 school year.

Our everyday heroes are the epitome of compassion, devotion and care, transforming everyday tasks into extraordinary impacts.

Their subtle yet powerful actions not only elevate the experiences of colleagues but also enrich the lives of the students we proudly serve. They are more than just supportive adults or empathetic peers; they are the vibrant pulse of our educational community, profoundly touching the lives of all they encounter.

Our everyday heroes come in all forms, quietly making a difference in our schools and board offices, yet very often they overlook or downplay their own actions.

This week we are celebrating Trent Sage, Amanda McInnes, and Michael DeMaeyer

Trent Sage

Trent Sage Trent is a Custodian at St. Francis of Assisi in Newcastle.

Trent was nominated by a colleague, who said:

“Trent Sage is the rock of our school – a steadfast, patient, and endlessly kind custodian who goes above and beyond every single day. Known for being very approachable, Trent fields countless calls daily, responding to every repair, maintenance, and cleanup request with unwavering cheerfulness and professionalism. His infectious positivity lifts the spirits of students and staff alike, making even the toughest days a little brighter.

Beyond his work ethic, Trent has a special way of connecting with students. Whether offering encouraging words or allowing them to assist with small tasks, he fosters a sense of belonging and importance, showing them that they, too, are valuable members of the school community. Trent’s modest, selfless dedication makes him a true unsung hero, and we are incredibly fortunate to have him as an integral part of our school family.”

Amanda McInnes

Amanda McInnes Amanda is a Guidance Counselor and Teacher at St. Peter CSS in Peterborough.

Amanda was nominated by a colleague, who said:

“Amanda is doing the extraordinary on her different roles at St. Peter Catholic Secondary School. As a Guidance Counselor focusing on Student Success, the way of accompaniment through her calm presence and of having a listening soul enable her to connect with students, staff, parents, and all – making them valued in the process.

As a passionate Catholic Educator on social justice initiatives and advocacy campaigns, she is doing a great leadership role in shaping and leading the social justice club in the school – Saints Action. This year, the school conducted a big Speakers’ Forum on Homelessness that brought in different organizations in Peterborough to share with the students the current issues and events in the community.

As a colleague, Amanda is generous of her time and efforts to collaborate and make things possible through a collective process and proper consultation. She is open to more ideas and allow others to speak up.

The school must be grateful of her dedication of making Catholic Education an inclusive and tangible formation for both the students and adults.”

Michael DeMaeyer

Michael DeMaeyer

Michael is the Principal at St. John Paul II CES in Lindsay.

Michael was nominated by a colleague, who said:

“I am honoured to nominate Michael DeMaeyer for the “Everyday Hero” recognition. As the sole administrator of a busy elementary school, Michael demonstrates an unwavering commitment to his school community each and every day. He leads with heart and humility, always placing the needs of his students, staff, and families at the centre of his work. Michael’s dedication to supporting all learners—especially those with diverse needs—reflects his deep belief in inclusion and equity. His ability to walk alongside his staff in difficult moments shows his strength as a thoughtful and compassionate leader.

What truly sets Michael apart is his generous spirit and genuine care for others. Whether it’s reaching out to a colleague in need, lending a listening ear, or stepping in to support a staff member, Michael leads with empathy and kindness. His approachability, sense of humour, and steady presence create a sense of calm and connection wherever he goes. Michael is a shining example of servant leadership, and his impact is felt far beyond the walls of his own school. He is, without a doubt, an everyday hero.”

We would like to thank Trent, Amanda, and Michael for their commitment to creating a culture of faith, hope and love to ensure equity and well-being at our board.
