Everyday Heroes: Michelle Kennedy, Matthew Laing, and Elaine Cooper
June 12, 2026
We are honoured to present this week’s Everyday Heroes for the 2025-2026 school year.
Our everyday heroes are the epitome of compassion, devotion and care, transforming everyday tasks into extraordinary impacts.
Their subtle yet powerful actions not only elevate the experiences of colleagues but also enrich the lives of the students we proudly serve. They are more than just supportive adults or empathetic peers; they are the vibrant pulse of our educational community, profoundly touching the lives of all they encounter.
Our everyday heroes come in all forms, quietly making a difference in our schools and board offices, yet very often they overlook or downplay their own actions.
This week we are celebrating Michelle Kennedy, Matthew Laing, and Elaine Cooper.

Michelle is the Executive Assistant to the Chief Executive Officer and Chief Education Officer (Director of Education) at PVNC Catholic.
Michelle was nominated by a colleague, who said:
“Michelle Kennedy has worked with PVNC Catholic for 26 years. For the last eight years she has served as Executive Assistant. Michelle possesses a knowledge of PVNC Catholic that is likely beyond anyone else that currently works for the organization. Institutional knowledge is very difficult to quantify, however, it’s clear that this is part of the value that Michelle brings.
Michelle has a difficult job, but performs it with grace and ease. She is hardworking, professional and an invaluable resource to the Director, Trustees and Superintendents alike. I know that if I have a silly question, a ridiculous ask, or an superfluous favour, Michelle is always at her desk, waiting to lend a hand.
Michelle has worked may late nights supporting the Board of Trustees. The preparation for these meetings is always on point. Things are prepared, the technology is ready and the meeting minutes are immaculate. Michelle is a key cog in the wheel that is PVNC Catholic!“ |
Matthew Laing

Matthew is a Teacher at St. Mary CSS in Cobourg.
Matthew was nominated by a colleague, who said:
“If you want to find Matt Laing, you’ll either have to look under a car, work your way through a group of students who don’t have his class but have somehow found their way to his room, or you’ll have to chase him down on a run (and good luck with that, because he’s not slow!)
I’m not sure how he finds the time to organize 45 athletes for track and field events, fill out forms for cross-country, chaperone trips overseas, and still manage to teach full time, but somehow he does. He can convince the quiet students to find their voice, the loud students to listen, and the students who are afraid to try to give their all. The students in his care feel safe, welcome, seen, and they all know that, wherever he is, there is a place where they belong. He is the epitome of dedication, and his sound advice is a beacon for staff and students alike.
He is humble, reliable, professional, and kind. I can’t think of a more deserving Everyday Hero.“ |

Elaine is an Educational Assistant (EA) at St. Martin CES in Ennismore.
Elaine was nominated by a colleague, who said:
“I met Elaine in 2019, and it didn’t take long to see the incredible connection she built with her students.
Elaine has a remarkable ability to recognize each student’s potential and encourage them in such a positive and meaningful way to achieve it.
Since Elaine became a part of St. Martin’s, we have had the privilege of working closely together with students. From the very beginning, she has brought not only fun and laughter, but also tremendous success to every student she supports.
Her passion for baking has become so much more than a hobby. Elaine uses it as a way to teach important life skills, build confidence, and create memorable experiences for her students. That same warmth and positivity extends to her colleagues as well, and she has an amazing way of making every day brighter for those around her.
Elaine is always willing to lend a helping hand and consistently brings fresh ideas and creativity to support her team. She is the kind of person who quietly goes above and beyond without ever seeking recognition for herself.
What truly makes Elaine an “Everyday Hero” is her humility. She would likely never see herself as someone deserving of the spotlight, yet she is one of the most valued members of our team and school community. Her kindness, dedication, and genuine care for others leave a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know her.
I am incredibly grateful that our paths crossed several years ago. Elaine has not only made work more enjoyable, but through the years I have gained both an exceptional colleague and a truly wonderful friend.” |
We would like to thank Michelle, Matthew, and Elaine for their commitment to creating a culture of faith, hope and love to ensure equity and well-being at our board.
