In memory of His Holiness Pope Francis
Apr. 21, 2025
Dear Staff and Families,
We are deeply saddened by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, a humble and courageous shepherd whose papacy has profoundly shaped Catholic education around the world.
Throughout his ministry, Pope Francis inspired educators to lead with compassion, to accompany others with humility, and to form students not only academically, but also spiritually—rooted in mercy, justice, and care for our common home. His teachings reminded us that Catholic schools are places where young people grow as disciples and stewards of creation, called to be agents of hope and healing in the world.
On a personal level, Pope Francis has had a profound influence on my own formation as a Catholic educator. His commitment to social justice and his call to walk with others—especially those on the margins—have helped shape my understanding of what it means to lead in faith.
In honour of his life and legacy, flags will be lowered to half-mast at all PVNC Catholic buildings beginning tomorrow. This act reflects our collective mourning and the deep respect we hold for Pope Francis and his ministry.
We invite all staff, students, and families to join in prayer as we give thanks to God for Pope Francis, his faithful witness, and the lasting light he brought to the Church and to the world.
“Pope Francis taught us to lead with compassion and courage,” said Kevin MacKenzie, Chairperson of the Board. “His voice resonated across generations, reminding us all to see Christ in one another and to walk gently with those in need.”
“The clergy and lay faithful of the Diocese of Peterborough are united with people around the world in praying for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis. In these Easter days, as the Church celebrates the Lord’s resurrection, we pray that Pope Francis may share in that risen life, and dwell in the eternal light and peace of heaven,” said Bishop Daniel Miehm.
A memorial Mass will be offered for Pope Francis at the Cathedral of St. Peter-in-Chains in Peterborough on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m. Additionally, memorial Masses will be celebrated in every parish church in this diocese in the coming days.
May his soul, and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
God bless,
Stephen O’Sullivan
Director of Education
