Celebrating 30 Years of Black History Month in Canada
Jan. 30, 2026
Each February, Black History Month invites us to commemorate and celebrate the experiences, achievements, and enduring contributions of Black communities in Canada, while deepening our collective understanding of their history and impact on Canadian society. Most importantly, Black History Month is a time to centre Black joy.
On January 7, 2026, the Honourable Marc Miller, Minister of Canadian Identity and Culture and Minister responsible for Official Languages, unveiled this year’s national theme: “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.” The theme marks three decades of Black History Month in Canada and recognizes the lasting legacy of Black Canadians, whose leadership, creativity, innovation, and resilience have shaped our past, continue to influence our present, and will inspire future generations.
As we reflect on this theme, we acknowledge that Black history is not separate from Canadian history—it is integral to it. Yet, the histories and contributions of Canadians of Black, African, and Caribbean descent have often been underrepresented in the Canadian History curriculum. As a Catholic school board, we are called through our teachings of solidarity and dignity to challenge these erasures, uplift Black excellence and heritage, and foster learning environments where every student and staff member can thrive.
In support of this commitment, resources are being provided to staff and students throughout the month of February. These resources are designed to support learning about Canadian Black history, culture, and joy, and to encourage meaningful engagement, reflection, and celebration across our schools and workplaces.
