Building Hope in Jamaica: A Collaborative Effort by PVNC Catholic
Feb. 3, 2025
In July 2024, 13 members of the Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington (PVNC) Catholic District School Board joined forces with 35 other volunteers to take part in a school-building project in Dumfries, St. James Parish, Jamaica.
This initiative was led by the Helping Hands Jamaica Foundation, in collaboration with Food For the Poor Jamaica and local construction teams with contributions by PVNC Catholic and the Ontario English Catholic Teachers’ Association (OECTA).
The new Dumfries Primary School marks the 27th school constructed through this partnership.
The PVNC Catholic group included two staff members, five students, and five parents from Good Shepherd, St. Elizabeth, St. Joseph and St. Francis of Assisi Catholic elementary schools.
Being part of the Helping Hands Jamaica Foundation’s school build in Dumfries was a truly humbling and inspiring experience. Zandra and I were blessed to be welcomed with open arms by the incredible people of Jamaica, whose warmth and strength left a lasting impact on us. Working alongside a dedicated team of volunteers and local trades people, we witnessed the power of community and the joy that comes from giving back,” said Stephen Smith, Principal at Good Shepherd CES and volunteer on the build. “The camaraderie among the Helping Hands Jamaica team was incredible, and together, we built more than just a school—we built hope, opportunity, and lasting friendships. This experience reinforced the beauty of service and the privilege of standing in solidarity with those in need. We left Dumfries with full hearts, grateful for the people we met and the difference we made together.”
Over the course of four days, the volunteers worked side-by-side with skilled Jamaican builders to create a new educational space that will serve as a vital resource for the community.
The goal is to provide the children of Dumfries with a safe, nurturing environment where they can thrive and pursue their education.
