Black History Month: St. Stephen CSS students celebrate culture through student-led ‘Hair is Your Crown’ workshop

The Black Student Association (BSA) at St. Stephen Catholic Secondary School in Bowmanville is calling ‘Hair is Your Crown’ a success.

A large number of students turned out for the student-led event on Feb. 12, 2025 which celebrated Black culture through an educational slideshow detailing the history of hair as well as a hands-on learning experience on how to do various hairstyles at several stations.

“Hair is Your Crown is all about seeing different communities come together to learn about the culture of Black hair,” said Lily July, Grade 12 student and member of the BSA. “For everyone to come together and learn different things is just magical. It’s a very special moment.”
