Empowering the Next Generation: PVNC Catholic students explore careers in energy at Darlington during Indigenous Skilled Trades Event
May 7, 2026
On April 30, nearly 30 students from across our six PVNC Catholic secondary schools stepped out of the classroom and into the heart of Ontario’s energy sector for a specialized Indigenous Skilled Trades Event at Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) Darlington Energy Complex.
This immersive experience was designed to provide students with a direct look at the high-tech world of nuclear power and the diverse career pathways available through the skilled trades.
The day was packed with technical exploration and forward-looking discussions.
Students were given the unique opportunity to tour a full-scale mock reactor, providing a hands-on look at the complex engineering required to power the province. This was complemented by a comprehensive bus tour of the Darlington station, allowing the group to witness the sheer scale of the facility. Beyond the machinery, students delved into the science of nuclear generation and the critical role it plays in Ontario’s carbon-free energy future.
A pivotal part of the event focused on the Indigenous Opportunities Network (ION). Students learned how this initiative works to recruit and place Indigenous talent into rewarding careers within the energy industry, ensuring that the next generation of workers reflects the diversity of the communities OPG serves.
The group also explored the future of Wesleyville (near Port Hope), discussing the long-term plans for the site and how the evolution of power generation—including upcoming projects and new technologies—will create decades of stable, high-skilled employment opportunities.
By connecting traditional knowledge with modern innovation, the event empowered our students to see themselves as the future leaders, technicians, and tradespeople who will keep Ontario’s grid running.
