HIGHLIGHTS OF CATHOLIC SCHOOL ACHIEVEMENT:

# Living Faith: There are many ways in which we demonstrate our living faith. Our Religion and Family Life curriculum is taught from Kindergarten to Grade 6 and is presented daily. We celebrate our faith monthly as a community at Mass in St. Michael’s Church, and each class is involved with a different part of Mass which creates a sense of pride in our faith. In addition, we explore the Catholic Virtues and Catholic Graduate Expectations each month during our announcements, prayers, assemblies, and activities throughout the school.
# Excellence in Learning: We celebrate our successes monthly with Good News Assemblies. As a staff, we at St. identify and address Literacy and Numeracy goals as part of our professional learning community. From these workshops we are strengthening our classroom assessment practices. Traditionally, we have also participated in the Board wide Thinkbowl event, and we are the reigning Battle of the Books Champions for our family of schools.
# Athletics: At St. Michael’s we have an active athletic program with lunch time intramural sports which include: soccer, volleyball, basketball, and broomball. Our Grade 4 classes take swimming lessons at the local YMCA over the winter. The Grade 6 students are involved with an annual curling bonspiel in late winter. St. Michael’s participates in all area and Board wide tournaments: Soccer, Cross Country, Basketball, and Three Pitch.
# Social Justice: Each class examines different issues through the Religion and Family Life curriculum as well as in Science and Social Studies. Current events also dictate the focus of social justice issues. For example, students were involved with fundraising for the Terry Fox foundation and participate in Earth Day activities. Last year, our school raised over $2000 for the 'Cops for Cancer'. Individual classes have been involved with collecting for Northumberland Fair Share, the local food bank. Other examples of social justice include raising funds to purchase 2 goats for a village in a developing country. In the past we have also supported the local chapter of the Special Olympics.
# Co-curricular Activities: There are several clubs which are active throughout the year. St. Michael’s has a chess club which promotes strategic thinking. We are participating in the Battle of the Books, Think Bowl, and Techspo. We have a number of students supporting the school through environmental programs (recycling, composting, etc) and through service programs (library helpers, kindergarten helpers, bus buddies, etc).
