The purpose of report cards is to provide helpful feedback to students and parents throughout the term/semester to improve student achievement. Teachers use the Board Assessment, Evaluation, Grading, and Reporting Handbook to guide their assessment, evaluation, and reporting.
Evaluations of student work occur at appropriate times throughout the semester/term. Grades on these evaluations are used to form the final grade in a course or subject. Evaluations are based on the overall expectations in the Ontario Curriculum.
Based on student achievement through the year, teachers assign a grade in a course or subject. The grade reflects the student's most consistent level of achievement throughout the course/subject, although special consideration is given to more recent evidence of achievement where appropriate.
Teachers complete an Ontario Ministry of Education Report Card according to Ministry policy using the guidelines provided in the Board Assessment, Evaluation, Grading, and Reporting Handbook. Some additional formal reports to parents, such as the Kindergarten Report Card and/or progress reports, are sometimes also required.
