Summer School - Secondary School Students

Summer School helps students start the next grade at the head of the class! Summer school reviews the past year, teaches new material for the year ahead, and provides computers and hands-on activities.

Full Credit - E-Learning - Credit Recovery-Upgrading Credit Course

Registration deadline is June 26th, 2012 at 4:00 p.m.

Session #1 - Wednesday, July 4th to Tuesday, July 17th, 2012

Session #2 - Wednesday, July 18th, to Tuesday July 31st, 2012.

For full credits, Secondary students must attend Sessions #1 and Sessions #2 Time: 8:15 a.m. - 2:15 p.m.

What types of courses are offered?

Secondary summer school offers five types of courses:

Full credit course, which are 4 weeks in length (20 days).
E-learning full credit course, which includes 110 hours to be completed by the end of 4 weeks. Please contact your guidance department for further information and a registration form.
Grade 11 and 12 upgrading credit courses, which are 2 weeks in length (10 days). Upgrading refers to classes students have completed within the current school year.
Grade 9 and 10 credit recovery courses, which are 2 weeks in length (10 days). Credit recovery refers to courses students have failed. Students must be referred for this program by the Student Success Team at their home school. The credit recovery course will be embedded in a literacy or numeracy remediation program.
Secondary Co-Operative Education course (1 or 2 credit option). Please contact your guidance department for further information and a registration form.

How do I register my child?

Complete the secondary summer school registration form on-line.
Print and sign the registration form for submission on the first day of class.
You will receive an e-mail notification of acceptance.

Note: If your child is not a student of the Board, you must submit a current report card and IEP (if applicable) by fax to (705) 748-5187 after registering online.

What are the attendance expectations?

If a student is late four times by more than 15 minutes, it will count as one day absent unless contact is made with the Principal of summer school.
A student will be removed from, and fail to receive an evaluation for, any course in which he or she has been absent for any reason for more than four days in a full credit program at summer school, or more than two days for a 2-week session.

Is lunch provided?

Students are expected to bring a lunch, snacks, and drinks to summer school.

What materials are required?

On the first day of class, a $25 deposit must be submitted for resources which will be refunded at the end of the program. Cheques can be made out to the PVNC. All supplies and textbooks are loaned to students for the duration of summer school only. The deposit will only be cashed if resources are lost or damaged, and the student will be billed for the remaining cost.

Is there a dress code?

Students are expected to dress for summer learning. If a student is inappropriately dressed they will be sent home to change. Uniforms are not required. Note: Each school site is air conditioned.

Is bus transportation provided?

Rural transportation will be available from local pickup points. Contact Student

Since public transit is available within each of the host school's urban areas (i.e. City of Peterborough, City of Kawartha Lakes, Bowmanville, and Cobourg) transportation is not provided to students residing in those areas and is the family's responsibility.

When are exams written?

Credit recovery and upgrading course exams are written in mid-July for session 1 and late-July for session 2. Exams will not be written at any other time.

When are final reports sent?

Midterm report cards for full credit courses will be available in mid-July. Final reports will be mailed in August. Copies of report cards will be sent to home schools.

What is the withdrawal deadline?

Students have until mid-July to withdraw from a full credit course, and by 9:00 a.m. on the sixth day of classes for credit recovery and upgrading courses. After this date, senior credit course attempts will be disclosed on the student's transcript.
