Welcoming Newcomers

On behalf of our students, staff, school communities, senior team and Board of Trustees, I extend a very warm welcome to all newcomers to Peterborough Victoria Northumberland and Clarington (PVNC) Catholic District School Board.

Our schools are safe, nurturing environments where student achievement and wellbeing are our top priorities.

We have supports in place to ensure English Language Learners transition smoothly into their new school environment. PVNC has established a multi-disciplinary Welcoming Newcomers Task Force. This team meets regularly to ensure our new students have the resources required to succeed.

Through our Vision that focuses on the pillars of Learning, Leadership and Service, students in PVNC elementary and secondary schools receive a robust education in learning environments that help students meet the Catholic Graduate Expectations that include becoming effective communicators, critical thinkers, collaborative contributors, responsible citizens and caring family members.

Support for elementary and secondary English Language Learners

English as a Second Language (ESL) itinerant teachers provide language support in elementary and secondary schools in our Board. The ESL teacher works in the classroom and with the classroom teacher to support a student's English language development. Depending on a student's needs, ESL is available weekly, bi-weekly or as needed. Effective instructional and assessment practices, the use of technology, and the skill and the commitment of our dedicated staff, contribute to creating learning environments where all students can succeed and thrive.

Supporting Syrian Newcomers

School boards across Ontario, including PVNC, are planning for the arrival of a growing number of Syrian Refugees sponsored by Private Sponsorship Groups and those in the Government Assisted Refugees Program. PVNC, in partnership with Halton Catholic District School Board, has created the following document to assist teachers and school administration in welcoming Syrian newcomers: http://goo.gl/CLosxD.

The New Canadians Centre (NCC) located in Peterborough is an invaluable resource to newcomers relocating to our region. The NCC works as an advocate for newcomers and offers a host of services to help newcomers transition into the community.

This site helps newcomers to Ontario navigate areas such as education, immigration and citizenship, housing, health, employment, legal services and daily life. The website offers translation in over 30 languages.

Should you require any information about our ESL programing or the resources in place at PVNC to support newcomers, please contact Student Achievement Consultant Sherry Lajoie at 705-748-4861 ext. 257 or email at: slajoie@pvnccdsb.on.ca.
